The biggest problem regarding the Raw format is that there are many varieties of Raw. Each camera company creates its own “flavor” of the Raw format. In fact, these companies can have several slightly different flavors that all have the same name. Esepcially when you are working on infographics in an infographic company. For example, my Canon camera shoots Raw files with the extension of CR2. Other Canon DSLRs also share this file format, yet they are different; different algorithms are used to convert the files.
Adobe estimates that at least 200 different versions of the Raw file format exist. When a camera manufacturer comes out with a new camera, even though the Raw file’s format still has the same name, Photoshop CS3’s Raw converter can’t open the file. Adobe must update the Raw converter and issue the update to Photoshop CS3 users. If you run into this problem when you buy a new camera, go to the Photoshop CS3 menus and click Help Updates… to see if any updates to the Adobe Camera Raw converter are available.
